1.5 miles east of the East Entrance to Yellowstone Nat'l Park, Wyoming
September 2005
This was the sky our first night at the Shoshone lodge. We had to go down the road to eat and this amazing cloud formation was coming up over the mountains of Yellowstone. We wondered, at first, if it wasn't Old Faithful, but it wasn't. Still have no idea what created this bizarre and interesting cloud formation. It was more like steam than a cloud and it was fast moving. And quite beautiful! I can see an angel flying in the shadows.
wonderful shot of it
It was an amazing thing to watch as it changed and moved so quickly. It really looked like some type of thermal activity. Saw a special on Yellowstone last week and it spoke of these phenomena, so I expect it is what it appears. Steam rising from the earth! I just feel lucky to have been there to get the shot. I think good photography isn't just about metering, composition, camera settings...but also about luck. Just being at the right place at the right time. I've got to learn to carry my camera everywhere I go just in case.
